United has a Targeted Offer to Buy Premier Qualifying Miles or Segments, but Does it Make Sense?

MileagePlus sent out a targeted offer to purchase up to 15,000 Premier Qualifying Miles (PQMs) or 15 Premier Qualifying Segments (PQSs) before June 29, 2015. These PQMs and PQSs count toward 2016 Premier qualification. You will need to sign into your account to find out if you are eligible. For those of you that are eligible, let’s dig into the details.
With this targeted offer a PQM costs about 17 cents. And remember PQMs only help toward achieving elite status, but cannot be redeemed for travel awards.
All MileagePlus members have the opportunity to purchase Premier Qualifying Miles (PQMs) using the Award & Premier Accelerators when purchasing a flight. PQMs, when purchased this way, cost approximately 12-15 cents per PQM (a better deal than this targeted offer)!
The Wrap-Up:
If you need to purchase PQM’s, it is more economical to do it through the Award & Premier Accelerator. The catch is you have to also purchase award miles at approximately 2.0-2.5 cents per mile in order to have the opportunity to purchase PQMs at approximately 12-15 cents per PQM. The allowable purchase amount and price of award miles and PQMs can vary and is dependent on your MileagePlus elite status and the ticket you are purchasing.
Before purchasing PQMs or PQSs, make sure you will accrue enough Premier Qualifying Dollars to achieve your desired elite status, because PQMs and PQSs won’t get you there alone!
