When Does it Make Sense to Buy the Double Your Points Rate?

Expiration Date – December 31, 2016

Hyatt is offering the option to enjoy double Gold Passport points for your qualified stays at participating hotels in 2016.

Typically, you earn five Gold Passport “base” points for every US dollar or foreign equivalent spent on eligible charges at Hyatt hotels. With this Double Your Points rate you will earn an extra five points, for a total of 10 points, for each dollar spent.

But, you should expect the Double Your Points rate to be more expensive than the more economical Hyatt Daily, Advance Purchase or other discounted rates. You are basically buying the extra Gold Passport Points. So does it make sense to book this rate?

Let’s look at an example:

We value Hyatt Gold Passport points at 1.8 cents per point. Said another way, you should feel good about buying Gold Passport points for that amount if you can, and it’s also the minimum value we suggest you seek before redeeming Gold Passport points. To see how TRVLVIP determines the value of a rewards point or mile, see our great Tip: What in The World are my Points and Miles Worth?

Let’s say the Double Your Points rate is $175 and a more economical rate at the same hotel is $159 per night. In that case, you will earn five extra points per dollar for the Double Points rate of $175. We estimate those extra 875 bonus points (5 x 175) are worth a total of $15.75 at 1.8 cents per point, which is very close to the $16 difference between the two rates. So, it’s pretty much a wash and a good way to buy points at 1.8 cents per point.

This type of neutral rate differential is common between the Double Your Points rate and the Hyatt Daily rate. They've done the math too. But, if the price difference between the Double Your Points rate and a more economical rate exceeds 1.8 cents per point, we suggest you forgo the points and book a lower rate because you don’t want to pay a rate difference that is more than the points are worth! And if you qualify for a rate that is lower than the Hyatt Daily rate (e.g. the Advance Purchase rate), you are almost always better off choosing the lower rate. You can book online or by phone and ask for Rate Code 2XPTS. This offer is not valid for groups or conventions.

The Wrap-Up:

If you can score a Double Your Points rate where the points cost 1.8 cents or less we suggest you go for it.
